Year 9 News – 12 December 2024

10/12/2024

A Year 9 Assembly was held at Coolock on Friday 6 December, being the students’ last day at the Coolock Campus.  The Assembly recognised and thanked the 2024 Student Leaders for their involvement in leading the student body.  The 2025 Student Team was announced and their badges presented.

Mrs Lisa Darlow and Mr Shane McConvill, the 2025 Year 10 Year Level Coordinators were present and provided information about the Headstart program and expectations.

Mr Matthew Smith then conducted a question-and-answer session with past students Lila Keck and Bridie O’Rourke about their pathways and experiences after being drafted at the end of 2024 to AFLW teams Carlton and Geelong respectively.  Having very different experiences due to injury and opportunity, Lila and Bridie were honest and informative about the challenges both on and off the field of moving into the AFL system.

Students then had the opportunity to reflect on the year’s activities and achievements through a PowerPoint presentation of over 210 slides. This showcased students participating in sport, music, electives, camp, classroom learning, lunchtime activities and whole college events such as Mercy Day, Australasian Mercy Secondary Schools Association (AMSSA) conference, Seeds of Justice and Caritas Ks.

Congratulations to our Year 9 Sportspersons of the Year, Cash Caldis and Lexie Fennell.  Not only highly talented in their respective sports, they also represented the College with grace, good sportsmanship and respect – true role models for other students.

Marion Doherty was also recognised at the assembly with the Library Patron Award, being the Coolock student who borrowed the most books in 2024.

Monday 9 December saw the cohort move to St Mary’s.  Many nervous faces and excited chatter were apparent as students commenced with an assembly and tours of the campus before heading into classes.  We hope they make the most of this Headstart program as an opportunity to learn about the St Mary’s Campus and commence their 2025 studies on a positive note. We wish them all well in their future endeavours.
