SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – STATE QUARTER FINAL

Cricket – Year 8 Girls

On Friday 17 November, the Year 8 Girls’ Cricket team headed to Strathfieldsaye Recreation Reserve to play in the State Quarter-Final against Preston High School. It was a beautiful day for cricket, and the girls were keen to win and qualify for the State Finals to be played in Melbourne next week.
CMC batted first and after the loss of a few early wickets, the batting was dominated by the Madis of the team. Both Madi Morrison (23*) and Madeline White (16*) were able to protect their wicket to make the majority of the team’s runs. They both were initially retired after they faced their ball limit (as per the Stage 2 Cricket rules) however, they re-entered the game after the loss of all other wickets. They kept the runs ticking over by hitting some quick ones and twos and finished strongly with a couple of boundaries. It was a terrific effort with the bat as the girls managed to bat out their 20 overs, finishing on 7/93.

The CMC bowling innings was set up by Dempsey McDonnell and Layla O’Brien who set the standard with the ball, sending down some impressive deliveries to have Preston in trouble early. They worked their way through the top order as a team, taking some excellent catches in the field, and bowling good line and length. By the tenth over, the run rate was slow, and the wickets continued to fall. The girls’ effort was amazing, the bowling continued to be impressive and as a result, Preston were all dismissed by the 16th over, finishing at 8/71.

The girls now progress to the State Semi Final, and hopefully final to be held in Melbourne on Thursday 23 November. Thank you to Zane MacDonald and Riley Travaglia for scoring and umpiring on the day. Thank you to Mr. Winter-Irving for looking after the team.
