Year 8 Engineering Design Prototype Robot

The Year 8 students are currently studying Physics, with a focus on light and sound.

As part of this unit, they learn how eyes function, including completing an eye dissection.

Students complete an engineering design task which involves designing and building a prototype of a hydraulic surgical robot, to be used to conduct eye surgery.

Following the engineering design process, students work in teams to research, design and build the robot, using a CAD program to design the body, before cutting it on the laser cutter.

Students use mechanical engineering principles to design and model how the pressure in closed hydraulic systems can be used to drive the arms of the robot.
