SCHOOL SPORTS VICTORIA – SANDHURST DIVISION

Netball – Year 7 Girls

On Thursday 30 May, the Catherine McAuley College Bendigo Year 7 Girls took to the court to compete in the Sandhurst Division Netball Tournament. Despite facing cold and windy conditions, culminating in a wet and challenging final, the teams displayed exceptional skill and determination throughout the day. A special thank you goes to Jordi O’Bree and Olivia Fitzpatrick for their invaluable contributions as umpires for the College.

Year 7A Team

Year 7A draw was a round-robin format, meaning they would play each team once, and the team with the most wins at the end of the day would be the overall winner.

Our first game was against Bendigo South East College. Harper Gordan showcased her exceptional shooting skills and utilised her height to great advantage while Mila Childs relentlessly defended her player taking numerous intercepts. The girls were happy to start the day with a win over BSE 18-6.

Next up was Marist College Bendigo. Ellie Gilchrist dominated in goals, creating space and movement while Ellie Macumber consistently converted turnovers into points with her beautiful shooting. CMCB defeated Marist 35-5.

With Milla Dalton taking key intercepts in defence and Sienna Raco commanding the midcourt, delivering perfect passes to the goalers, the team was able to secure a convincing win over Crusoe College in the next game with a score of 30-1.

The game against Weeroona College allowed the team to try some different combinations in the second half. It was great to see how versatile this team can be. The final score was 35-3.

The final game was against Girton Grammar School. By this time, the rain had set in. Ava Hope was excellent at chasing up the loose ball and applying pressure across the court, while Evie Gretgrix took multiple intercepts, providing her attacker with ample opportunities to convert. CMCB defeated Girton 33-1.

Congratulations to the CMCB Year 7A Team for winning the tournament. The team’s outstanding performance has earned them a spot in the Loddon Mallee Regional Final in July.

A special thanks to Christina Napoleon for her scoring and assistance throughout the day.

Year 7B Team

The Year 7B team was ready and raring to go. The B division was split into two pools. CMCB’s first game was against BSE. The girls started strong, and even with cold hands the team goalers Lily, Layla and Thea shot accurately. It was a close hard-fought game, but the girls finished with a win 14-11.

The team’s second game was challenging with the wind. The team started slowly however some strong feeding from Poppy and Marlie in the mid-court meant the girls were able to defeat Crusoe 41-2.

Next up was Creek Street Christian College. Many of the girls from Creek Street were new to netball but were very friendly and nice. The CMCB team enjoyed the sociable opposition. Asha, Lily, Layla, and Thea shot beautifully, with the team winning 52-1.

The team finished in first place in their pool, leading to a semi-final game against East Loddon P-12 College. East Loddon started well and displayed some impressive skills for such a small school, with some of the girls only in Grade 6. Our defenders, Molly, Georgia, and Ruby worked hard to provide opportunities for our attackers. The team made it through to the final winning 36-4.

The Grand Final was against Marist College. The rain set in, meaning the team had to adjust their gameplay. All players contributed to the final game of the day and worked hard to apply pressure all over the court, chasing up loose balls, and pulling the ball in strong. The final score was 26-6.

Congratulations to all players for taking out the win. Your netball talent and skills are amazing but most of all your attitude and sportsmanship were exceptional. Well done to all involved.

A big thank you to Indie Kramer for scoring and assisting the team.
