Year 10 Camp: Compassion, Culture and Careers

17/08/2022

| 25 – 29 JULY 2022 |

Early in Term 3, our Year 10 students set off on camp to explore Melbourne. The theme for this year’s camp was Compassion, Culture and Careers. We moved around the city in small groups, accompanied by staff and met in the evening for a meal.

Each camp group took on the City of Melbourne, navigating public transport to get them around to the different venues and there was also a lot of walking involved. We visited many colleges and universities including Elly Lukas, RMIT, University of Melbourne and Swinburne University of Technology at the Richmond Institute. Students were able to explore different career venues with tour guides and ask questions about future studies and opportunities.

Whilst on camp we also visited museums, exploring various cultures. We visited the Jewish Museum, Islamic Museum, the Shrine and the Immigration Museum as well as went on a Koori Walk from Federation Square. Students developed more understanding of culture and history and looking at the world through a different lens. On the last night, we enjoyed a shared meal and then explored Lygon Street before returning to the accommodation.

Students were well received by all venues as they displayed the Mercy values and were respectful and empathetic to the presentations. Year 10s came back from camp more aware of choices for future studies and careers, knowing more about how to get around Melbourne and more of the rich cultural history of the city and its forebears.
