Vision Australia Visit
15/06/2018Year 10 Youth Ministry students have been meeting with clients from the Vision Australia Day Centre group. The Vision Australia clients arrived by bus to the Drama Hall at St Mary’s. Here Year 10 students chatted with them while they ate their lunch. In groups, we asked them questions and made tea and coffee for them. The elderly clients all had varying levels of vision loss, ranging from partial to complete.
It was amazing to talk with the ladies and learn about their lives and how they came to be where they are today. It was lovely to see them happily telling their stories and to tell them about our lives in return. Many of these clients live by themselves or in retirement homes and, for some, Day Centre is the only time of the week they have a chance to get out and about. It’s wonderful to be part of this community engagement program where both students and clients are being treated as valued members of the community. We, the students, feel that we are giving back to the clients by socially interacting with them and the feedback from Vision Australia has been that the clients feel they are giving back by contributing to our learning. It is hoped that this partnership between Catherine McAuley College and Vision Australia will continue for future classes.
