VCE VM Year 11 Numeracy Vegetable Garden
18/09/2023As part of the Year 11 VCE Vocational Major (VM) Numeracy program, students were required to complete a plan for an unused area of the school to build a vegetable garden. Students were required to measure the space, draw scaled plans, transfer these plans online and ensure they had added in the correct number and size of garden beds to complete the project. Students then had to calculate the volume of soil required to fill the beds so they could create a garden to support the Food Technology program at St Mary’s.
Once planning was complete, the garden beds were delivered and an implementation plan was devised. The garden is located in the northeast corner of St Mary’s.
When the day finally came, we had perfect weather to take over the area and transform it into a garden where we intend to grow herbs, Indigenous plants and vegetables for use in the kitchen at school. We will also use the growth of these plants and other aspects to continue teaching numeracy; incorporating measurements of the weather, soil moisture, growth of plants and so on.
All students should be congratulated on the teamwork shown throughout the day to achieve the goal.
