VCE VM students present Career Expo for Year 9 students
06/06/2024At the start of Term 2, the Year 11 Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM) students in the Work Related Skills (WRS) class were tasked with organising a career-based Expo for Year 9 students. The aim was to provide examples of careers, jobs and pathways that the students could follow once completing their Year 11 or Year 12, that did not require a university degree. The expo was trade and community based with a wide variety of industries covered.
The WRS students were allocated two types of research of career pathways, Vocational Education and Training (VET) and also an allocated industry, which were designed for the classes to share information. They were then allocated their board research which was to be presented in the Expo. The WRS students then had three weeks to gather research , organise and prepare their board.
Students were given a large board with four panels that needed to be filled with information and pathways. Information could relate to VET, School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs), construction, retail, information, agriculture, community service groups, health etc. They were assessed on research, presentation of board and participation on Expo day.
On Monday 13 May the WRS students travelled to Coolock to set up the gym and have 160 Year 9 students go through the Expo. The Year 9s had a workbook to complete that gave information and questions on each board. A follow up survey of the Year 9 students gave good results and comments about the Expo, together with suggestions for next year.
We would like to thank Ms Gina Giblin, Assistant Principal Learning and teaching, for her organisation at Coolock Campus, the Year 9 Year Level Learning Leaders and teachers for their support and the Year 9 students for their participation prior to the College subject selection process.
