Two workplace experiences in one week

22/05/2024

For my Year 10 Work Experience I was lucky enough to go to two workplaces. I spent Monday and Tuesday at St John of God Hospital, Bendigo. The first day I was in the Medical/Rehabilitation Department, spending the day with a nurse. Each nurse in Medical/Rehab. cares for five to six patients. The nurse, Jackie, and I cared for her patients and continually monitored them. I observed her complete all her nursing duties and was able to assist in some instances.  Her patients were lovely and I even got to help one of them get discharged after long weeks in Rehab. The second day was spent in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) with Maddie. This department of the hospital was very different to the Medical/Rehab. section as each nurse was caring for two patients. The staff in the CCU are crucial carers at the hospital as the patients in their care are all very unwell and these nurses are working diligently towards getting their patients back to full health. I thoroughly enjoyed both days at St John of God as it was eye opening to see what it is like being a nurse. It was key to see how a nurse’s role is essential to care for patients while they are in hospital. I would love to go back as a volunteer to learn more!

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I ventured to Maryborough’s Goldfields 99.1FM for work experience at a radio station. When I arrived, I was greeted by a lovely passionate team. Initially I had a tour of their whole station and learnt about the history of Goldfields FM and how important the station is to the community of Maryborough and surrounds. During the first day I learnt how to use their online audio editing software to create recordings and to edit songs and how to create and record voiceovers. Key to producing and presenting Lunchtime Live was selecting twenty of my favourite songs that I would use on air during my own broadcast. On Wednesday I was lucky enough to meet the mayor of Maryborough and be part of a live interview which included asking questions. I co-hosted the Baby Boomers show, with Dan, on Thursday as well as being part of the panel of ‘On the Couch’ sporting show, where I shared my personal soccer experience as well as my predictions for this week’s AFL games. The most exciting part of my time at Goldfields FM was hosting ‘Lunchtime with Rose’ on both Thursday and Friday at 1pm, giving me the opportunity to air and introduce my favourite songs.
