SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA: SANDHURST DIVISION
On Wednesday afternoon 15 May in glorious Autumn weather our Catherine McAuley College Senior Girls Football Team played Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC) in the Sandhurst Senior Girls Football competition at Weeroona Oval.
A team of twenty-five eager girls approached the game with enthusiasm, with a few nervous players taking the footy field for the first time.
BSSC got an early lead with a couple of goals, however good pressure from our back line prevented them from adding any more goals to the scoreboard for the half. Emmi Banfield, Paris Borserio and Lily Dickson were laying great tackles and clearing the ball from the BSSC forward line. In the latter stages of the first half some great shepherding from Jess Kopp and run and carry from Ella Cochrane, Molly McGregor and Madeline Marks saw us getting the ball in our forward line. Unfortunately, good defence from BSSC kept us to just one behind.
In the second half, with BSSC leading by seventeen points, our girls lifted, and Maeve Tupper continued her outstanding work around the ball. With some great running from Eva Jan our scoring opportunities opened, resulting in Anais Mott snagging our first goal from a tight angle in the pocket. Another quick goal from Maeve saw us back in the game with only five points the difference.
Despite some great pressure in the back line from Bridie Semmens, Molly McGregor and Lily McMahon, the BSSC girls were too good in the end and scored three quick goals to take control of the game. The final score was BSSC 5.9.39 to CMC 2.2.14.
The girls should be tremendously proud of their efforts. They played well as a team and were extremely competitive throughout the game. A huge thank you to all our helpers on the day, with special thanks to Tanner Nally, Connor O’Farrell and Isaac Carracher for managing the umpiring duties.
