Tayla Vlaeminck Ashes Debut

25/07/2019

Congratulations to past student Tayla Vlaeminck (Class of 2016) who this week celebrated her Test debut. She bowled for Australia in the team which retained The Women’s Ashes in Taunton, England. Prior to the Test, Tayla was officially handed her “Baggy Green” cap by Mitchell Starc.

Tayla is the fastest bowler in Australia’s Ashes squad and has endured two knee reconstructions, glandular fever and a dislocated shoulder, all in the space of four years, while rising to the top of her sport and making her international debut late last year.

After completing her VCE in 2016, Tayla was selected for VicSpirit and opened the bowling against New South Wales in the Women’s National Cricket League later in 2017. Tayla was selected for the Women’s Twenty20 International and played with the women’s squad against Pakistan and India. She was then named in the Melbourne Renegades for the Women’s Big Bash League season in November 2018.

In June 2019, Tayla was selected by Cricket Australia for the women’s team to tour England in July. Tayla bowled four overs on the final day and finished her Test debut with figures of 0-37 off 11 overs with what was described as “a fiery spell” of bowling. While she not yet taken an Ashes wicket, Tayla has demonstrated her potential to be a bowling force for Australian women’s cricket and has already attracted the praise of many commentators and fans.

Throughout her time at school Tayla’s commitment to her sport and resilience in overcoming injury were inspirational. Equally inspiring was her academic achievement, which saw her achieve a perfect score of 50 in VCE Physical Education in 2016.
