SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – STATE FINALS

Tennis – Intermediate Boys

Congratulations to our Intermediate Boys Tennis Team that competed at the SSV State Tennis Finals on Friday 17 May. In cool and at times wet conditions, the boys played exceptionally well, only to be knocked out in the semi-finals by a very talented team from Melbourne High School.

Playing their pool rounds first, the CMCB team were defeated 5-1 in the first round by a very skilled side from Nossal High School. The scoreline was not reflective of how close all the games were, with many points and games going to sudden death. Game 2 was against Lalor Secondary College. This was another tough match; however, the boys really found their groove and played some great tennis. They rode this wave of good form and went on to dominate this match to win 5-1. Their third and final pool match was against Horsham College, with a win required to qualify for the semi-finals. The boys set the scene early with their determination, winning three of their four singles matches. They then dominated the doubles sets to win the match convincingly 5-1, setting themselves up for that coveted place in the semi-final.

The semi-final against the top team from Pool B – Melbourne High School, was a tough match, played in tough conditions. With light rain starting to fall and the wind chill factor at freezing, it was not a pleasant experience for either team. The CMCB boys did, however, put up a great fight as they went game-for-game against their opponents early on in both doubles games. Nevertheless, Melbourne HS won the key points when it mattered the most. The CMCB team again took it up to Melbourne in the singles matches winning one of the four sets, and once again the games were tight – but it was not enough as the team went down 5-1.

The boys were a little disappointed, however, they proved that they could match it with the best in the State. All team members should be very proud of their efforts and results.

Congratulations boys, State Semi-finalists is an incredible achievement.
