Senior Girls Netball Finals Day
03/09/2024NETBALL VICTORIA: VICTORIAN SCHOOLS NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
FINALS DAY
Senior Girls
The Senior Girls Netball Team had an early start as the eagerly headed off to the Victorian State Finals. What was expected to be an extremely tough pool certainly turned out to be that way and with the match format being two 7-minute halves, there was little room for drop off in intensity.
In Game 1 the team faced Maribyrnong College. This match was high class and the girls most certainly had their chances, but the opposition were very polished and were able to effect turnovers at critical points, which saw the team go down 6 goals to 11.
Game 2 was a highly-anticipated show down with Rowville Secondary College. This was a closer match and was winnable. The scores see-sawed right up until the final siren where sadly another loss resulted 10 goals to 11.
Game 3 saw the girls up against Peninsula Grammer. This was a terrific match as the girls started off slowly, but then found some great form to establish a 4-goal lead early into the second half. However a small lapse in intensity saw Peninsula fight back and finish strongly as they clinched a draw just before the final siren, 13 goals apiece.
In Game 4 the girls played The Geelong College who went on to eventually win the state title. This team was very well drilled as they play together competitively weekly. They proved to be too strong and the girls went down 9 goals to 18.
Game 5, the final match of the day was against Loretto College Ballarat and with the wind now out of the girls sails they struggled to find any consistency or system. It did however prove to be a great opportunity for all the Year 12 girls to have some game time together one last time. They may have lost this match 8 goals to 12, but it was a match that many will remember fondly as their last game for CMCB.
This Finals Day was the end of a journey that saw this team achieve some incredible wins, experience some fantastic moments and play some brilliant school netball together. It really was an amazing effort by the team to make it through to this day – neither our Year 11 or Year 12 netball girls had ever made a state finals day before, so we congratulate them on this achievement, as well as their sportsmanship; they represented CMCB with grace and style.
Congratulations girls, we are so proud of you all.
Special thanks to Mrs Clare Hope for coaching the girls this year. Your expertise and knowledge was greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Jessica Millar for being Team Manager for the day and to Mrs Holly Speed for scoring.
