Senior Boys out of time in basketball final
26/07/2023SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – LODDON MALLEE REGION FINALS
Senior Boys Basketball
The Senior Boys Basketball team eagerly took to the court in the Loddon Mallee Region round, held in Echuca.
In the first game, which was against St Joseph’s College Echuca, the team quickly returned to the style of play that saw them take out the Sandhurst Division Finals.
Clean passing and creating space for one another enabled a strong lead to be created throughout the first half. St Joseph’s came out strong in the second half and applied a new level of pressure. Shooting accuracy for St Joseph’s went up and CMC struggled to find the basket. Despite the increased challenge and threat on the scoreboard, some solid leadership and composure on court ensured the team came away with a win.
Having also beaten St Joeseph’s, our contest against Mildura Senior College became the deciding match for the Regional Final. From tip-off, this game was set to be a challenge. Two quick 3-point shots from Mildura had our team chasing. Mildura was using their height advantage well, but CMC stayed right in the contest.
Disaster struck not long into the half, as one of our key tall players was injured and ruled out of the match. Despite this, the team on court didn’t drop their heads and got back to work to try and peg back the game. The boys tried and tried, but for whatever reason could not get a shot to land in the second half. Despite the lead that Mildura had, the CMC team didn’t stop attacking. They turned up the pace and then cracked some late shots to put pressure back onto Mildura. Sadly, it was too late and the team ran out of time, going down by 12 points.
The team is to be commended for their consistent team play throughout both the Sandhurst and Loddon Mallee rounds. The team can stand tall, knowing that they played with sportsmanship at all times, were not drawn into tactics from other teams, and represented our College very well. A big thank you to Mrs Pearce and Miss Hercus for accompanying the team to the respective tournaments.
