Senior Boys Cricket
The Catherine McAuley College Senior Boys Cricket team competed in the Sandhurst Division competition on Tuesday 18 February, at the Fr Michael Howard Oval at Junortoun. Playing in magnificent conditions, the team were keen and excited before the first ball was bowled.
In the first game, against Bendigo Senior Secondary College, CMCB won the toss and elected to bat. Openers Gus Hay and Xavier Grant got the innings off to a flying start, with both batters finding the boundary on multiple occasions and producing some huge overs of scoring. Gus was the first batsman dismissed for 35, with a partnership of 96.
Xavier continued to keep the scoreboard ticking before being dismissed for an excellent 73 and putting the team in a commanding position at 2/128. Hugh Behrens rotated the strike well in the closing overs and finished not out on 17, as CMCB set a total of 3/149 from their allocated 15 overs.
The bowling innings got off to a brilliant start with Seb Rossi taking a wicket on the first ball. The CMCB bowlers then collectively applied great pressure to the BSSC team, taking wickets at regular intervals and stalling the run chase. BSSC finished 34 runs short of the target on 7/115. Multiple wicket takers were Darby Whatley with 2/1 and Lachlan Wilson with 2/13,
In the second game, CMCB played Marist College Bendigo, with CMCB winning the toss and electing to bowl. Early wickets were taken by the opening bowlers Hugh Behrens 2/6 and Max Thompson 2/2, to put the Marist team in danger of a very low score. Angus O’Brien came into the attack shortly afterwards and produced a fantastic spell of 3/8, as Marist ended their innings all out with their score on just 50.
The CMCB opening batters of Oscar Cail (28 not out) and Harvey White (13 not out) wasted no time in the run chase, meeting the target in 3.4 overs and claiming a 10-wicket victory.
The team have now progressed to the Loddon Mallee Region stage of competition to be played on Tuesday 4 March, in Mildura.
