Year 7 Boys Football

The Sandhurst Year 7 Boys Football competition was held on Tuesday 23 April.  We welcomed Marist College Bendigo, Bendigo South East Secondary College (BSE), Crusoe College, and Weeroona College Bendigo to the school. It was great to utilise the new Mercy Junortoun Sporting Precinct for the competition.

From the start of the day, the Catherine McAuley College Bendigo (CMCB) boys were fired up and ready to go, but lacked some concentration during the warm-up. As the first game against Marist approached, you could see the boys’ mindset shift and they were ready to go. As a crowd began to form around the oval, the boys couldn’t wait any longer.

The first half began with some great efforts from our Captain, Miller Polglase, who stood up in defence to take multiple contested marks, turning the footy over and gaining back control of the contest. This then led to some fast football where the boys began moving the ball better with handball chains, beating the opposition on the way back. Our goal-kicking got underway with Hudson Svanosio kicking our first major and showing his class around the goals. From then on, we were able to improve our run off the half-back line and ran away with a convincing win and confidence levels high.

We finished with a great spread of goal scorers, with Jesse and Zander scoring three each, and Hudson, Tahj, Kahl, Jimi, Tadhg, Knox and Lon all contributing one each. Our best players were Miller, Jimi, Kahl, Louis, Roman and Knox, with an honourable mention for Jack Yates.

Our next game was against BSE. Moving to the bigger ground took a bit to adapt to for the boys, but once we settled, we really used the space to our advantage and ran away with the game. Jimi and Archer were great on the wings and through the middle of the ground as link-up players, moving the ball forward with pace. Louis was smooth-moving and made plenty of great decisions to hit up targets and use the footy well in traffic. Kahl played a key role across half-back and in the middle as he took plenty of great marks and used the footy well when moving it forward. Lastly, Knox was unreal through the middle with plenty of contested footy, while Tadhg played the ruck role perfectly all game, working hard all over the ground. Goal scorers were Wesley and Hudson with two each, Lon, Miller, Roman, Jimi and Knox all with one each. Our better players were Kahl, Jimi, Knox, Tadhg, Miller and Louis.

Overall, it was a great day with the boys coming away as champions and really working well as a team. While only six players were named the best for each game, it was very hard to pick these players as everyone did well in their roles and played to their strengths, which is what was asked of them. Next, we will travel to Swan Hill to compete again and, hopefully, continue our unbeaten run.

Stay humble and stay hungry. GO CMCB!
