Maybe I could be a Mathematician?
05/09/2019On Thursday 22 August, three students from Coolock; Oliver Edmiston (Year 7), Noah Layton (Year 8) and Jiya Patel (Year 9) and I attended a special mathematics day at Girton Grammar as part of science week.
Melbourne University had sent along internationally recognised mathematician Arun Ram to talk about his love of music and mathematics. His presentation was not only about his life journey that led to him becoming a mathematician but also the historical links between classical music and philosophical thinking throughout the ages. Arun Ram was a thoroughly entertaining and engaging speaker.
After the talk and some lunch, the students were presented with some mathematical investigations to work on in small groups and as individuals. These were quite simple problems at first glance but they provided us with very rich conversations and thinking from all of the students who attended.
