SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – STATE QUARTER-FINAL

Cricket – Intermediate Girls

On Thursday 2 November, in perfect conditions, the Intermediate Girls Cricket team faced off against Northcote Secondary College in the SSV State Quarter-finals at Ewing Park.

The girls were sent into bat after losing the toss, so they were keen to set a big target for their opposition. Meg O’Callaghan (14) and Isabella Monotti (34) set the tone early for the CMC team as they got off to a flying start. Sienna Barnett (10), Zahli Waugh (5), Tessa Skipper (7) and Maeve Caine (12*) were the other contributors with the bat, along with a hefty “extras” total of 53, as the girls amassed a formidable total of 5/141 off their 20 overs.

With a talented bowling attack keen to defend their great total, the girls started their defence with exceptional pace and tight, line and length bowling. Sienna Barnett 2/23 (4) took the first wicket of the day, and from that moment onwards the result was never in doubt. Wickets fell consistently with all bowlers doing their bit. Meg O’Callaghan 1/9 (3), Madeline Best 1/16 (3), Maeve Caine 0/6 (3), Isabella Monotti 1/5 (3), Jemma McDougall 1/14 (2), and Milla Finch 0/21 (2) ensured Northcote finished on 6/97 after their 20 overs.

It was a terrific match for all the girls as they fielded and bowled brilliantly to restrict their opposition from gaining any sort of momentum. Their ability to prevent easy singles and stop boundaries was a major contributing factor to the comprehensive 45-run win.

Special thanks to Sam Scott who scored and Ted Harrop who umpired on the day, they did a fantastic job, and everyone appreciated their efforts.

The girls have now qualified for the SSV State Finals Day, to be played on Friday 10 November in Melbourne. Good luck girls.
