On Tuesday 8 October, the Year 9/10 Girls Cricket Team competed in the Sandhurst Division Intermediate Girls Cricket competition at MJSP.

It was a glorious day for cricket, and the girls played two impressive team games. It was pleasing to see an even spread of performances and a high level of sportsmanship shown to the other teams.

Game 1
In the first game, the girls played against Marist College Bendigo. Captain Maddy Best won the toss and chose to bowl. She then opened the bowling and immediately took a wicket in her first over. Layla O’Brien and Lexie Fennell bowled the next few overs and took an impressive five wickets between them, leaving Marist in all sorts of trouble at 7 for 2.

From then on, all players could get involved and have a bowl. At the end of the innings, the girls had restricted Marist to a very moderate total of 9 for 37. Madeline White and Layla O’Brien then opened the batting with great success as Layla hit a quick-fire 13 runs and Madeline retired on 10. As with the bowling innings, all players were then rotated through the batting innings, as they all had the chance to experience being ‘out in the middle’. It was a terrific effort with most of the team contributing some runs, resulting in a final total of 5 for 98 off fifteen overs. This secured not only the win but also a place in the final.

Game 2
In the girls’ thrilling second game, CMCB claimed the victory in a tight match against Weeroona College. Batting first, the girls put a very competitive total on the board with Layla O’Brien and Madeline White starting well, before Layla was dismissed for 9. Maddy Best (41) then came to the crease and combined brilliantly with Madeline White (43) to notch up a very competitive total of 110.

The girls went into the field quietly confident of being able to defend the total. Maddie Best opened the bowling and secured an early wicket to put CMCB in the box seat. She then went on to take another three wickets from her three overs. A terrific direct hit run-out from Madeline White was another highlight at the mid-way point of the game.

Weeroona continued to put up a great fight and were slowly closing in on the target. However, Layla O’Brien came back into the bowling attack and took two key wickets, displaying great accuracy and poise in a pressure situation. Additionally, the entire team displayed impressive fielding as everyone attacked any ground ball to keep the pressure on Weeroona’s batters. It was a terrific end to a fantastic game by both teams.
