03/09/2024

As part of their Biology unit, Year 7 STEAM students recently enjoyed a whole-day excursion to the Kyabram Fauna Park.

The excursion provided a hands-on opportunity for students to observe and explore the relationships between various species in a natural setting and to reinforce their knowledge on Food Chains and Food Webs.

Upon arrival, students were greeted by the Park’s diverse exhibits, showcasing a wide array of wildlife, such as kangaroos, koalas, meerkats and wombats, offering a close-up view of these iconic animals. The reptile house was a favorite, where students observed and learned about their roles as both predators and prey in the food chain.

The education session was a highlight of the day, where students engaged in interactive activities designed to deepen their understanding of food chains and food webs, exploring the connections between producers, consumers and decomposers, gaining insight into how energy flows through ecosystems.

In addition to the formal learning, students had the chance to explore the Park’s aviary, home to a vibrant array of bird species, including cockatoos, parrots and owls. These birds, with their diverse diets and hunting behaviors, provided real-world examples of the concepts discussed in class.
