Football Finals

On 25 July, the Year 7 Boys, Year 8 Boys and Junior Girls Football teams departed in the early hours of the morning to head to Mildura, for the LMR Finals Competition. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfect conditions for Football.

Year 7 Boys

For Game 1, CMC played St Joseph’s College, Mildura, with the latter coming out firing with the first two goals of the game. The boys fought back all game to draw level with ten minutes to go. Goals by Darcy Tyler, Bentley Geary and Charlie Macumber saw the boys get over the line in a great game of footy. The midfield trio of Patrick McNamara, Jake Rosa and Jaxon Kelly were also instrumental in the win as well as some critical defending from Nic Hietbrink and Adam Holland.

Game 2 against St Joseph’s College, Echuca would decide which team would progress to the next stage. Once again, the boys got off to a slow start with St Joseph’s kicking three goals in the first five minutes. CMC managed to wrestle the game back and stop the scoring, but CMC was left with plenty of work to do at halftime. The second half started as an even contest with limited scoring opportunities for both teams before St Joseph’s ran over the top once again to finish the game as comfortable winners.

The boys played the games with exceptional sportsmanship and displayed exemplary school spirit by cheering on the other CMC teams competing on the day.

Year 8 Boys

The boys quickly found their feet after a long bus road and put together a strong performance against Mary MacKillop College, Swan Hill, in the first of four matches for the day.

In Round 2, the CMC boys took on the home team St Joseph’s College, Mildura. In a tightly contested tussle on the big, expansive main ground, the boys were able to put together some excellent passages of play and collect another victory.

The third match was held directly after Round 2 on a smaller ground, which didn’t suit CMC’s style of play and they quickly found themselves in a tight battle with St Joseph’s College, Echuca who played an impressive style of football. It looked like all hope was lost when the ball was stuck in CMC’s defensive end with less than 30 seconds on the clock and St Joes leading by a single point, but a quick transition of play and an outstanding finish by Max Connick snatched a winning goal as the siren was sounding.

Going into the last match of the day against their Bendigo rivals, Bendigo South East College, and a winning record of 3-0, a victory was vital for CMC to ensure they progressed through to the State Quarter Finals. After a slow start to the match in which BSE were able to take advantage of some CMC errors, the match was evenly contested before the boys were able to piece together some clean passages of play and take control of the game in the second half to take the victory.

With the LMR title secured the team now progresses to the State Quarter Finals in Ballarat on Wednesday 16 August.

The girls played two games for the day, with two 20-minute halves, allowing us to rotate our bench throughout.

After a great start to the first game, with high intensity and terrific ball movement, the girls came away with a convincing win to start the day.
