E-scooters not permitted at CMCB

31/05/2024

No student at Catherine McAuley College Bendigo (CMCB) may ride an e-scooter to or from school, or ride an e-scooter at any time while wearing the CMCB uniform.

Throughout 2024, VicRoads is reviewing e-scooter safety and compliance measures for the use of e-scooters in Victoria ahead of introducing permanent regulations later in the year. Meanwhile, an e-scooter hire company has commenced operations in Bendigo in late May with the distinctive purple e-scooters noticeable around the streets of Bendigo.

Although e-scooters may provide a viable alternative mode of transport for short trips and are becoming increasingly popular, many safety issues and legal requirements need to be carefully considered and understood by riders. After considering how best to ensure the safety of our whole school community and minimise the risks associated with e-scooters, Catherine McAuley College Bendigo has decided that our College is not a place for hired or personal e-scooters.

It is illegal for any minors under the age of 16 to ride e-scooters in Victoria and CMCB has decided, in line with other schools in Bendigo, to extend that ban to all students. Therefore, no student may ride an e-scooter to or from school or at any time while wearing the CMCB uniform. In addition, e-scooters are not allowed to be on, or stored on College grounds.

Victoria Police will be enforcing the safe and legal use of e-scooters and will not tolerate irresponsible behaviour on our roads.

We thank our parents and carers, and our College community for your ongoing support in our decisions to keep our students safe.
