Drama Excursion to the Ulumbarra Theatre

On 30 May, our St Mary’s Drama students had the opportunity to view the Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of World Problems at the Ulumbarra Theatre, Bendigo. This performance was on the VCAA VCE Playlist and a requirement for our VCE Drama students, who completed analyses and evaluative tasks on their return to school.

The production was a solo performance, featuring Carly Sheppard. The production elements ( set, costumes, props, sound design and lighting) were engaging and creative. They conveyed a monochromatic landscape and patchwork of materials.

The story focused on both individual and collective memories, as the main character remembered the past, shared the present and explored a possible future. While the production was heavily text driven and, at times, quite challenging for the students to follow, it was a wonderful experience of theatre and its potential.
