SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 2

Football – Senior Boys

In Round 2 of the Premier League Competition, CMCB were up against a very strong and talented team from the combined SEDA Colleges. The game was played at the Kevin Bartlett Reserve in Burnley, where the teams were treated to some spectacular autumn weather. This game was expected to be tough, as SEDA had already registered a solid first-round win against Bendigo Senior Secondary College. The coach was wary of the competition, so he urged his boys to be up and about and ready to play right from the first bounce.

The first quarter was riveting, as both teams showed plenty of determination and attack on the ball. It was an exhilarating display of skill as the two teams locked horns right from the centre bounce. Wil Pinniger got the CMCB team off to a flying start as he kicked the first goal of the match, within the first few minutes. This was quickly followed by a great goal to Xav Grant, as he broke clear of the forward congestion.

Ollie Morris then showed the opposition his class, and a clean pair of heels as he hit up Pinniger again on a lead for another major. Although the boys were looking good, a few moments of complacency saw SEDA kick the next two goals in quick succession, to have the match evenly poised. CMCB boys soon found their rhythm again and began to dominate all over the ground. They started to execute their skills with precision and produced seamless transitions from defence to attack. The boys unleashed a relentless desire to win the ball and as a result, Pinniger and Grant were able to kick the final two goals of the quarter.

It was a terrific start, and by the quarter-time siren, it was CMCB 5-1-31 to SEDA 2-1-13.

In the second quarter, SEDA regrouped to mount a spirited fightback. They clawed their way back into the contest with some excellent kick-and-mark play, making space and then converting opportunities. They also tightened up their defence and ramped up the pressure on the CMCB midfield. They were winning the contested ball and running in numbers as they pressed forward to kick four straight goals and hit the front. However late in the term, CMCB managed to stem the tide as Dan Noden slotted through a crucial goal to give CMCB a slender 3-point lead going into the halftime break.

With a home final to play for, the CMCB boys set themselves for battle and were determined to play with the same flair they displayed in the first quarter. So, it was with relentless pressure and at times, ruthless efficiency that CMCB kicked a barrage of goals in the third quarter. It was a clinical display as the boys booted six goals and two points to break the game open, whilst at the same time they were able to keep SEDA scoreless. Goals to Jaidi Jackson-Leahy, Kobi MacDonald, Dan Noden, Xavier Grant, and two to the dynamic Oscar Cail demonstrated a commanding display of skill and determination that set the team up with what was hopefully a match-winning lead going into the final quarter.

At the start of the last quarter, and with just twenty minutes left to play in the game, CMCB showed no signs of letting up, as Dan Noden stamped his authority at full forward, kicking another three goals. The midfield feed was first-class, and the boys continued to capitalise. Young-gun Ben Miller even got in on the act on the back of a 50m penalty to kick his first goal in senior footy.

Despite the valiant effort from SEDA to mount a comeback, the defenders shut down any hope that SEDA thought they had. The CMCB team had produced another fantastic quarter of footy and came away with what was in the end, a resounding victory. CMCB 17-9-111 to SEDA 8-4-52.
