Bendigo Foodshare Visit
23/11/2023As we move towards Christmas, Catherine McAuley College (CMC) recognises that this can be a challenging time for many within our Bendigo Community. So, this term throughout the College year levels, we are undertaking a range of initiatives to support Bendigo Foodshare, including a whole school food drive, growing and harvesting produce through the Agriculture program and the Year 7s participating in the Community in Action program.
Bendigo Foodshare have said, “We think this is fantastic! It teaches young people about the importance of community service and empowers them to engage in positive change.”
With Bendigo Foodshare being our Term 4 fundraising and awareness focus, the Coolock student leaders have been doing some fantastic work. They started with a Friday fundraiser, raising a whopping $265 by selling icy poles to fellow students.
- They then visited Golden Gums Farm where, with the help of Steve and Ethan, they ‘shopped’ for the freshest local vegetables, harvesting 35kg of broad beans, garlic and snow peas (valued at $450).
- These veggies were taken directly from the farm to Bendigo Foodshare’s Long Gully shed, where the students donated them to the food relief program, so that Central Victorians doing it tough can enjoy local, organic farm-fresh veggies.
- While at the shed Joe, the Warehouse Coordinator, took the student leaders for a tour and talked to them about what happens at the shed and where the food goes.
Bendigo Foodshare have passed on their “huge thanks to the CMC Coolock leadership team for tackling social injustice in our region with such positive action!”
