B&B Highway incursion for Environmental Science students

17/10/2023

Last week our Environmental Science students were able to put theory into practice, joining forces with the PlantingSeeds B&B Highway program.

VCE Unit 2  students participated in a whole day incursion as part of a ‘B&B Highway (Bed and Breakfasts for Birds, Bees, Butterflies and Biodiversity)’ grant from the City of Greater Bendigo.

This had students planting native pollinators and building solitary bee homes in a previously sparse area of the St Mary’s Campus. Through this initiative, students learned about biodiversity, habitat regeneration and native urban pollinator corridors.

B&B Highway is a habitat regeneration program that supports biodiversity and encourages sustainability within urban ecosystems, providing rest and revival for native pollinators. As well as learning about pollinators and biodiversity, students completed a biodiversity quest around the school, planted native pollinating plants and built solitary bee homes.

On behalf of the College, we thank the presenters Tyler and Rachel, who were informative and inspiring for our students. This hands-on experience beautifully aligned with our Environmental Science curriculum, particularly in the area of ‘Managing Food and Water Security’, while also reinforcing our school’s commitment to sustainability through our reGEN program.

A critical outcome of this program was for students to become effective citizen scientists; protecting pollinators and sharing their knowledge and know-how with their families and communities.
