SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – SANDHURST DIVISION

Year 8 Boys Cricket

Game 1 vs Marist
It was a gentle start to the morning with the cricketers making their way down to the Mercy Junortoun Sporting Precinct for the first stage of the cricket competition of 2025. CMCB were proud to host the pool matches once again, with CMCB, Bendigo South East College, East Loddon P-12 College and Marist College Bendigo playing it out on O’Keefe and Quinn ovals.

The newly elected captains for CMCB, Louis Travaglia and Miller Polglase won the toss and chose to bowl first against Marist College. In the shortened format of 15 overs, it’s always important to be switched on in the field and have bowlers bowling good line and length. The opening batting pair for Marist made the most of loose deliveries, with one opener going on to make a brilliant 100 with some aggressive but controlled batting. Marist finished with an impressive score of 0/159.

When it was our turn to put on the pads, Miller Polglase and Tarkyn Ralphs stepped up to open the batting. These two got CMCB off to a promising start. Louis Dalley then came in and scored a hard-hitting 23, whilst Louis Travaglia got a couple away on his way to 15. Some creative shots were being played by the lower order when Darcy Cakebread showed great integrity by prioritising the team’s interests in an attempt to complete a run. Unfortunately, he was run out just short of the crease, without facing a ball. Miller Polglase finished on about 45no as the innings ended with CMCB making a commendable 6/111 from 15 overs.

Batting (6/111):
Polglase – 45*
Dalley – 23
Travaglia – 15

Game 2 vs East Loddon
In the new format this year, the teams that won the first game would play off to advance to the next stage. So, Game 2 was only a consolation match.

CMCB went in with a mixed-up batting order, with Fletcher Stevenson and Darcy Cakebread getting the team off to a calculated start. Darcy seemed very happy not to make a diamond duck in this innings. Batsmen were retired after roughly 3 overs, allowing each player to show their craft. A few sixes were hit and a few more boundaries too. CMCB completed their batting with a score of 3/123

In the field, CMCB also shared the bowling load, with most bowlers having a turn. The fielding wasn’t the best display from a CMCB team, but the boys know they have plenty to focus on for future sporting opportunities. East Loddon finished their innings at 5/68.

Batting (3/123):
Ralphs – 29*
Polglase 25*
Richardson – 16*
Stevenson – 13*
Cakebread – 12*
Westley – 12*

Bowling (5/68):
Stevenson – 3/13 off 2 overs
Travaglia – 1/9 off 2 overs
Rees – 1/16 off 2 over

A special thanks to Callan Orr, Miller Evans and Ari Sawyer who umpired and managed the scorebook for the day. And as always, thanks to Mrs Speed for all the preparation and organisation of the tournament.
