Top Designs Success for Systems Technology Student

14/03/2025

Congratulations to Caleb Tobin (Year 12) whose VCE Systems Engineering work ‘Automated Sheepyard’ has been selected for exhibition in Top Designs 2025, part of the VCE Season of Excellence.

Top Designs received over 1000 applications this year, 140 of which were shortlisted. Caleb is one of only eight Systems Engineering students selected for exhibition.

Caleb has written about his work for the upcoming exhibition, “I have invented a livestock handling device designed to improve efficiency and safety for both animals and farmers. The system follows livestock and provides continuous flow, allowing handlers to perform tasks with minimal movement. Micro-switches detect livestock alongside custom 3D-printed mounts in the steel-made system. The actuator arm controls the gate, enabling livestock entry, while a cable winding mechanism propels the gate forward and backward. This system helps farmers increase profitability and reduce overhead costs.”

Systems Engineering teacher, Mr Steve Tyzzer, is “ immensely proud of Caleb’s achievement in such a highly competitive and talented field. His selection is truly well-deserved, as he devoted countless extra hours and weekends to bringing his vision to life. His unparalleled work ethic and dedication make this recognition a fitting reward for his outstanding efforts.”

Caleb will attend The Top Designs 2024 exhibition preview and opening from Thursday 27 to Friday 29 March. Top Designs 2024 is a partnership between the Melbourne Museum and VCAA, featuring “Victoria’s brightest minds in design and technology”. We encourage students and families to visit the exhibition, which runs from March to July. Details below.
