French exchange experiences shared
17/02/2025On Tuesday 4 February, French students in Years 10 to 12 gathered in the French classroom to hear about the once-in-a-lifetime experiences of Sammi, Emi, Milla, Meg, and Ann, five fortunate students just back from France.
Four Year 12 students spent two months abroad, while one Year 11 student was fortunate to stay for three months. While in France, they lived with host families, attended French schools, and immersed themselves in the culture.
“[The students] shared some of the best memories from their travels, from having fun exploring unknown places to becoming lifelong friends, and they gave extremely good advice for anyone considering heading off on an exchange in the future. With a spirit of fun and interaction, the session allowed students to ask questions and gain a deeper insight into life in France, its traditions, and the experiences related to overseas study.
This was an inspiring event and an eye-opener, with many of us being even keener to travel and experience French culture!”
Diana Napoleon, Year 11
“It was truly wonderful to learn how each of them had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the French language and culture. By going to school in France they were able to engage with students and teachers and experience what school in France is like.
Living with their host families made their experience even better since it gave them a chance to see what everyday French life is like, such as enjoying homemade meals, celebrating Christmas and New Year, or getting to know their host families’ traditions. The entire experience was so inspiring, and it was clear they all came back with a deeper love for French culture and language.”
Shenoli Perera, Year 11
“I found it very helpful and interesting in how the exchange was set up and how it was planned. Even though many of them booked with the same companies they all had completely unique experiences. This made me and others even more keen to learn the French language and culture.”
Carol Hanna, Year 11
During the session, everyone spoke really well about their experience, including their happiest moments as well as the challenges they had to overcome. It was definitely a great way to encourage French students to take the opportunity to study abroad, and I think the way they answered questions and talked about the contrasts between home and their exchange was well done. I think it really resonated, and I loved hearing about things you wouldn’t hear from anyone but those who actually experienced it.
Brad Savy, Year 11
“It was great to hear about the girls’ thoughts on their exchange to France. They shared very insightful stories and information about how they organised their trip including the many positives and challenges they faced throughout their experience.
We were very grateful for the opportunity to hear from them as it was very helpful for us to hear personal stories from their trip when considering going on exchange to France, and to see the different paths and organisations they went through.”
