Junior Girls Soccer give all in freezing conditions
25/07/2024SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – LODDON MALLEE REGIONAL FINALS
Junior Girls Soccer
On Friday 19 July, the Year 7 and 8 girls in the Junior Soccer Team made the road trip to Moama to compete in the Loddon Mallee Regional Finals. Once off the bus, the girls were greeted with a wind chill factor of below freezing as they prepared themselves for games against St Joseph’s College Echuca and St Joseph’s College Mildura.
The first game was against St Joseph’s Echuca. The girls started this match in red-hot form as they had multiple shots at goal within the first couple of minutes. The deadlock was broken midway through the first half by team captain Bronte Ellerton, as she hit the back of the net to the delight of the team. CMCB continued to dominate possession but failed to convert their chances in front of the goals.
The second half started positively with Mila Childs getting on the end of some terrific play to score our second goal of the match before a double from Sophie Healy consolidated the win. St Joseph’s Echuca managed to kick a goal late in the game to make the final score 4-1.
Goal Scorers: Sophie Healy (2), Bronte Ellerton (1), Mila Childs (1)
Game 2 was against St Joseph’s Mildura, with the latter dominating chances in the first half as they took advantage of the wind. Some great defensive efforts from the defenders and a few nice saves from goalkeeper Zara Mould kept the scores at 0-0 at halftime.
The second half saw CMCB dominating possession and chances but also failing to score. The last five minutes turned into a great back-and-forth battle with the ball going from end to end but neither team could score the crucial deciding goal. Sophie Healy won a free kick late in the game, however, her subsequent shot on goal rattled the goalpost and ricocheted wide. Finally, the referee blew the whistle to end the game with the score 0-0.
A win and a draw meant CMCB were in for a nervous wait watching the two St Joseph’s teams battle it out and for the winner to be crowned by goal difference. St Joseph’s Echuca put up a good fight, but the game ended 4-0 in favour of St Joseph’s Mildura meaning CMCB lost by one goal on goal difference.
The girls played with exceptional effort and skill as well as sportsmanship, both days were very enjoyable for the players and staff. A special thanks goes to our Year 9 helpers – Assistant Coaches, Maddy White and Abi Boyer.
