Senior Boys hit and miss at soccer

SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – SANDHURST DIVISION

Soccer – Senior Boys

The CMCB Senior Boys Soccer team competed in the SSV Soccer competition, against three other local schools: Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC), Castlemaine Secondary College and Girton Grammar School.

The team had high spirits with one of the strongest teams fielded in recent memory. The competition consisted of three short games, meaning concentration was essential. Jack Nuttall and Joel Feeney took on leadership roles and took the team through their paces.

The first game was against BSSC. During the first half, CMCB took most of the possession but couldn’t manage to deliver the ball to star forward Hsar Ler Htoo with any accuracy. BSSC was content to let CMCB maintain possession and try to play on the counterattack.

Unfortunately, early in the second half, one of these counterattacks paid off for BSSC, and they found the back of the net. CMCB had some close chances late in the game and looked like the better team, but they didn’t get the result they wanted. Final score. BSSC 1 – CMCB 0

The second game was against Castlemaine Secondary College. Castlemaine had just come off a loss to Girton Grammer, so we felt confident.

CMCB put on a clinic in this game. The delivery that had been missing against BSSC was delivered in spades throughout this game. There were many strong attacking opportunities and a few strong chase-downs from our defensive line, but ultimately the decider came off a composed finish from Tamba Basha off a great cross from Jaerin Tuohey. CMCB 1 – CSC 0

The final game was against Girton Grammar School. Going into this game there was still a chance that if the boys won, they could possibly win the day as Girton had beaten BSSC in the previous match.

The game was close throughout. But despite some strong runs from players like Jack Nuttall, Joel Feeney, Will Chalkley, Noah Kelly, Tamba Basha, and Hsar Ler Htoo, Girton’s defence was like a wall. A couple of lightning-fast forward runs were too much for CMCB to handle and left Allan Murithi in goals with too much to keep out, despite his best efforts and some stunning saves. The boys did manage to hit the back of the net with a great goal to Noah Kelly, however, Girton was clinical. The final score was Girton 3 to CMCB 1.

The boys played some great soccer all day, and showed fantastic sportsmanship, both with each other and with their opposition. They played clean, fair and well. Congratulations boys on a terrific day. Special thanks to Ethan Pope who ran the line for the team for all games.
