Year 7 Basketball teams win the day at Sandhurst Div

SCHOOL SPORTS VICTORIA – SANDHURST DIVISION

Year 7 Basketball

On Wednesday 13 September, the Year 7 Basketball teams competed at the Sandhurst Basketball competition at Red Energy Arena in Bendigo.

Year 7 Girls

The Year 7 Girls had their first game against Crusoe College. This was a bit of a challenge, but the girls came out playing a full-court press and man-to-man basketball. They had great pressure, causing turnovers allowing for easy baskets. We came away with a win 37-7.

The next game was against Victory Christian College. All players contributed to the win 58-0. Next, we played East Loddon P-12 College, winning 48-0. Our last game of the rounds was against Marist College Bendigo. We were expecting a tough match. Our players came out determined to get a good start, applying lots of pressure allowing for some easy baskets and we came away with a 38-2 win.

The final was played against Girton Grammar School. The girls played with the same determination as they had all day, winning 38-2. Well done to the team for an excellent gameplay and attitude. Also, thanks to Charlize and Holly for their help on the day.

Year 7 Boys

The first game for the Year 7 Boys was against Weeroona College. After a slow start with the boys not switching on in defence, the team knuckled down, crashed the offensive boards and drove to the rim. Darcy Tyler stepped up in defence effecting some important steals, as we went on to win 41-16.

The Second game was against Girton Grammar School. A strong defence was on show here, a strangling full-court press. Putting great pressure on the ball carrier saw a great 44-14 win, with Eli Fennell showing off elite playmaking ability.

The next three games went a similar way, with Charlie Macumber blocking shots, Jake Rosa cleaning the boards, Quinlan Cody finding holes in the defence and Isaiah Cass showing nice touch with his shooting. Scores were 48-5 against Castlemaine Secondary College, 60-4 against Eaglehawk Secondary College and 52-3 against Creek Street Christian College.

The final was our last game of the day, coming up against Bendigo South East College. It was a tight battle all game, never being more than 6 points between the teams. After being down at halftime and scoring under 10 points for the first time all day, the boys stepped up their defence again, drawing level with 10 seconds to go and forcing a turnover on the inbound. Unfortunately, the clock wasn’t stopped at the last minute as it should have been, losing about 20 seconds of game time. From that, it was decided to play 3 minutes of overtime, instead of the usual 2 to make it up. With our stifling defence and relentless attack of the basket, we came out victorious 27-17, with Bentley Geary lighting it up from outside and Archer Tuohey dominating in at the post.

This win sees us qualify for the Loddon Mallee finals on 13 October. Thanks to the helpers, scorers, umpires, and parents who supported us. Special thanks also to our student referees and scorers: Jake Gribble, Mackay Mitchell, Blaine Schelfhout, Charlize Pinder, Archie Stevens and Tyce Griffin.
