Assessment and Reporting Grade Scale

18/08/2022

Parents with multiple students at Catherine McAuley College (CMC) are likely to already be aware that over the past few years the College has had different grade scales for major assessment tasks, depending on the student’s year level. Tasks for students at Years 7 – 10 have been receiving a grade based on a Victorian Curriculum standard, while students in Years 11 and 12 have received a score from “Very low – Very high”.

CMC has been reviewing this practice and, based on some feedback from students, families and teachers, we have moved to adopt a singular grade scale for Semester 2, adopting the “Very low – very high” scale.  This allows for more specific feedback that is particular to each assessment task, rather than teachers feeling compromised between providing feedback on overall progress and the task simultaneously.

This also allows our teachers to better recognise the great work of our students in Years 7 – 10 when they are doing outstanding work that is demonstrating outcomes for their current year level. This can now be graded as high or very high, where in the past it could only be graded as “at standard”.

Students in Years 7 – 10 will still receive an overall Victorian Curriculum semester grade reflecting their progress for the semester on their Semester 2 report.

Live reporting and feedback on your child’s learning is accessible at any time through the Parent Access Module (PAM) or the SIMON platform.
