Season of Creation

Season of Creation

The Season of Creation is celebrated each year, beginning on 1 September and concluding on 4 October which is the feast of St Francis of Assisi.  The theme for this year’s celebration is The Web of Life.  Pope Francis, in his encyclical, Laudato Si’ challenges us to “Care for our Common Home”, particularly those dependent on the land for survival.  During the Season of Creation, we are invited to a spirit of ecological conversion and actively hope for solutions.  Each week has a different theme, noted below, with a reflection from Pope Francis on Oceans.

  • 1 September: Oceans
  • 8 September: Flora and Fauna
  • 15 September: Storms
  • 22 September: Animals

Oceans contain the bulk of our planet’s water supply, and also most of the immense variety of living creatures, many of them are threatened for various reasons.

Creation is a project of love given by God to humanity.

Our solidarity with the “common home” is born from our faith.

Let us pray this month that politicians, scientists and economists work together to protect the world’s seas and oceans.

(Pope Francis, September 2019)
